Flowering bulbs offer a multitude of opportunities for brightening the garden.
Bulbs require little garden area and can be planted in annual or perennial flower beds, among shrubs, under trees, in tubs and planters and in nearly any area of the garden.
Bulbs can be planted as either formal or informal garden beds, or they may be naturalized.
Avoid small numbers of bulbs planted individually or in straight lines, bulbs planted in drifts or informal masses are more pleasing to the eye
Hardy bulbs survive winters in the ground and may be left in place all year; most should be planted in early autumn outdoors or they can be forced in a pot for indoor winter flowering, after which they may be planted permanently in the garden.
Tender bulbs should be planted outdoors in spring after all danger of frost is past and may need lifting and storing indoors after flowering. While indoors, these plants should be placed in a well lit location and fertilized like any other indoor house plant. Always allow the foliage to remain green until it naturally dies back (usually 5 to 6 weeks after flowering).
