Benefits of a Greenhouse.
Greenhouses allow you to grow plants that would not survive the conditions we experience outdoors at certain times of the year.
It extends your growing year, providing the right environment for raising early seeds and cuttings and over-wintering delicate plants.
Plant seeds for your vegetable garden early and when the threat of frost has passed, you will have healthy strong seedlings to transplant -
remember to sow a few at a time so they will not all mature at the same time.
Raising more delicate exotic vegetables is possible with your greenhouse.
It is important to choose the right size of Greenhouse:-
Your perfect greenhouse should fit both your available space and your plants.
When choosing a greenhouse, keep in mind that no matter what size greenhouse you purchase now, you will probably fill it within a year.
You will want to make sure that you start out with plenty of growing room.
Choosing the best position for your Greenhouse:-
A good site should be sheltered from high winds and easily accessible from your home and garden, as access to utilities such as electricity and water could be important.
If your greenhouse is going to be used mainly for starting seeds or plant propagation in the summer, place it in partial shade to minimize heat build-up.
If your greenhouse is to be used for growing in autumn and winter, or growing plants to maturity, it will need maximum exposure to the sun. It should receive a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
It is best to position the greenhouse with the ends facing east and west. This will provide more heat gain from the sun during the winter and create less shadowing in the greenhouse.
Remember the difference in sun angles from summer to winter (the sun is much lower in the winter).
Plants like people can get sunburn, too much sunlight can make your greenhouse too hot which stresses your plants - more plants die from overheating than cold
Polycarbonate glazing diffuses light; diffused light reaches your plants from all angles and produces fewer shade spots. Plants don’t have to strain to reach towards the light., as a result the plants develop into healthy, compact specimens.
To keep the temperature in your greenhouse down in summer, remember to take the following steps:-
Cover the glass with liquid shading to provide shade inside.
Open the vents and door to ventilate and get air circulating.
Water regularly.
