Tips for a successful basket:  

Use a John Innes compost, which will hold water much better than other composts.  
Add water retaining granuals to your compost - remember - lack of water is the biggest killer of a hanging basket.  
The compost should be sloped into the middle of your basket (like a funnel), so that the water does not run over the sides when you water.  
If you use moss, put a layer of polythene (such as a black plastic bin liner) behind the moss before you add the compost.  This further aids water retention.
Mix a slow release fertiliser into your compost (such as Osmocote), which will feed your basket throughout the Summer without the need for a liquid feed.
